Tennessee SNAP in 2026: What Changed and What's On Hold

Tennessee had planned new SNAP purchase restrictions for July 31, 2026. A federal court order on June 22, 2026 vacated the USDA approvals, so the restrictions cannot move forward under those approvals.

What is on hold

The USDA approval described restrictions on certain processed foods and beverages, including soda, energy drinks, and candy. The USDA’s Tennessee waiver page says the court order means implementation may not proceed. Reuters reported that the ruling found the agency lacked the legal authority it used for the approvals.

Work-rule changes still matter

Tennessee says adults from age 18 through under 65 who do not live with a child under 14 may face the time limit unless an exemption applies. The state lists exemptions for people with a qualifying health condition or disability, pregnancy, caregiving, school, and other situations. Ask Tennessee DHS about your own case.

What to do now

Check notices from Tennessee DHS and finish recertification on time.
If you may be exempt, tell DHS and ask what proof it needs.
Keep your address and household information current.
