Indiana Government Benefits

If you live in Indiana, you may qualify for several government assistance programs. Below are the major Indiana benefit programs — covering food assistance, health coverage, children’s health insurance, and cash assistance — each with a plain-English guide to who qualifies and how to apply.

A family of three in Indiana: four programs, four very different income limits

ProgramMonthly income limit, group of 3What it may pay
Indiana TANF (cash assistance)$778 grossup to $513 a month
Indiana SNAP (food assistance)$2,960 grossup to $808 a month
Healthy Indiana Plan (adults 19 and older)$3,141.85health coverage, not a cash payment
Hoosier Healthwise (children)$5,805.85health coverage, not a cash payment

A family of three can earn too much for cash assistance and still qualify for food assistance, and still have children who qualify for health coverage. The limit for children’s health coverage is more than seven times the limit for cash assistance: $5,805.85 against $778 for the same size family.

Important: “Family of three” does not mean the same thing in all four programs. Indiana counts a TANF assistance group, a SNAP household, and for Medicaid a tax household.
